Exploring the Bible // Amos

The book of Amos calls out the sins of Israel and their neighbors, and holds accountable the injustice of its people. Written around 767 to 753 BC, Amos was a farmer and fruit picker in Judah who both prophesied and wrote the book following the events. He was a common man with a heart for God and others, who lived roughly 10 miles south of Jerusalem. However, God called him to bring this word of judgment to the northern nation of Israel.

At the time, Israel had much success in its military and economic exploits, yet, their sins were great. They were taking advantage of others, living for themselves, and rebelling against the ways God has established for them. And unfortunately, when Amos shares this judgment call with them, they ignore him.

While many prophets of the time shared messages of redemption within their prophecies, Amos leaned heavily on the message of their sins.

What We Can Learn

Although Israel had found outward success, inwardly their hearts were far from God. Showing that we can have success in this world but it doesn’t mean God’s favor is on our lives or that our relationship with Him is solid. May we heed this warning and reflect on our own heart posture. In addition, may we be people who care for others and do what's right. Not merely be hearers but also doers of the word, amen?

Memory Verse

“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amos 5:24
